What is the Federal Skilled Trades Program?
It is a Canadian immigration program that started in 2017. This category aims to provide foreign workers with economically valuable skills the opportunity to obtain permanent residency in Canada. It is a system that only allows applications from individuals who have been invited through Express Entry.
Application Requirements for the Federal Skilled Trades Program
Work Experience
- At least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the five years before applying.
- An offer of full-time employment for a minimum of one year or a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority.
- The job offer should be in the same skilled trade as the one used to apply for the visa or hold a valid new Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for a skilled trade job.
- Holding a Certificate of Qualification issued by a provincial government.

Language Proficiency
A minimum of CLB5 in ‘Listening’ and ‘Speaking’ and CLB4 in ‘Reading’ and ‘Writing’ is required in an English or French language proficiency test designated by the immigration bureau, taken within two years before the application.

Own Funds
Conditions include having sufficient funds to support oneself and one’s family during the stay in Canada. However, this condition is waived if there is a valid job offer and the individual is legally able to work.

Application Process for the Federal Skilled Trades Program
01Meet the Requirements for the Federal Skilled Trades Program
All requirements for permanent residency must be met.
02Register for Express Entry
Once the conditions are met, register your profile online for Express Entry.
03Enter the Selection Pool after Score Calculation
Your score will be calculated based on your profile registration, allowing you to enter the Express Entry selection pool.
04Receive an Invitation To Apply (ITA)
The ITA grants you the right to submit your permanent residency application. The immigration office conducts regular draws to select candidates from the pool based on their scores. If you don’t receive an ITA, you can remain in the pool for up to one year.
05Apply for Permanent Residency to the Canadian Immigration Office within 60 Days
Once you receive the ITA, you have 60 days to complete your permanent residency application. Create an online application portal account, attach the necessary documents, and submit them to the Canadian Immigration Office. Applicants aged 14 to 79 also need to submit biometrics (fingerprinting) and a photo.
06Review by the Canadian Immigration Office
Once the review by the Canadian Immigration Office is complete, you will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Resident (CoPR) letter.
07Landing
Applicants outside Canada will enter Canada with the CoPR. Applicants inside Canada can complete the landing procedure online.
08Receive Your PR Card
After landing, your PR card will be delivered to a specified address in Canada within a few months.
